For example, if someone typed in “kidney stones cure� and you’re the top web site in Google for that search term you can pick up tons of free visitors to your site and explode your online income.

So many think that topping the search engines can only be done by huge companies, or those with massive budgets. The truth of the matter is it’s free when you know how. Over the course of a few articles I am going to show you step by step how to top the results for your keywords related to the service or products you sell. We’re going to be able to do it quickly, relatively easily and most importantly without spending a single penny.

So what do you need to do first? Well the first thing you need to do is create a large list of keywords directly related to your niche or service. You can do this by using http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/.

So let’s say you were selling a product on “how to grow the perfect rose garden�. You’d go to the above link and type in “rose garden�. Now make a huge list of all the keywords that show up that are directly related to rose gardening.

Once you’ve got a list of 50 or so keywords your ready to start optimising your site for the search engines. I’ll be showing you how to do that in the next article.

Please don’t let the name “search engine optimisation� put you off. It may sound technical and that you need to be some sort of online whizzkid to be able to do it, but the simple fact of the matter is do it correctly and it doesn’t need to be technical at all.

AJAX is short for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, a development technique designed to create interactive web applications. There is no doubt that AJAX is here to stay, at least until something better comes along. It’s also likely that the major search engines will become more adept at spidering and indexing AJAX generated content. However, until they do, the simple solution is to avoid using AJAX where it is not needed on your site. If you do intend to use AJAX make sure that your IT department or web developer create real links and HTML content to feed the spiders with.

Based on experience, the figure from Yahoo probably represents only 10% of all demand for that term. That is, there is probably over 220,000 potential visitors to your website. That’s not a bad target to aim for.

To determine the level of supply, i.e. how many sites cater to that particular keyword, it is best to use the most popular search engine, i.e. Google. If you put the term ‘making money’ into the Google search box, it will return about 220 million entries. That is a lot of competition for the 220,000 potential visitors. The odds are not good. Even if the traffic was equally shared between all competing websites, you will have to share one visitor with a 1,000 websites. There are other options.

The first option is to choose a related keyword that has a better demand-to-supply figure. This is the so called ‘long tail’ approach. Instead of the above ‘making money’ term, we could use ‘making money from home’ or ’start making money today’ or some other term. The key requirement is to find a term that has low supply (competing web sites) but still enough demand (Google searches) to justify your effort.

The second option is to use a number of related keywords, one or more per page of your web site. Good Keywords can help you identify appropriate related keywords. These can then collectively attract a large enough volume of visitors to justify your effort. These can funnel the traffic to your resource page or to your main page which has the main keyword. This will boost the rankings of your main page and get you the volume of business that your efforts deserve. What I have covered in this article is how important keywords are to your website. Without consideration of this key concept, your results will be a hit and miss affair. You need to consider demand and supply i.e. how many searches there were for a particular term as well as how many websites could meet the search criteria. There are at least two approaches to get winning results, one is the long tail approach in using related keywords. The second approach is to aggregate a number of keywords to achieve some viable results.
